NEW YORK – It’s big, it’s bright, and it’s – where else – Times Square.

New York Marriott Times Square megadisplayEven the New York Times agrees that the 25,000+ ft² Diamond Vision® display adorning the façade of the New York Marriott Marquis on Broadway, between 45th-46th Streets beats all comers as far as big electronic displays in the vaunted ad space.

And the NYT – along with others media outlets –note the board’s first paying client for sales agency Clear Channel Spectracolor during this year’s holiday season will be a big one: Google.

The new display came as part of a redevelopment of the Marriott site by Vornado Realty Trust. The city-block-long billboard, with display technology from Mitsubishi Electric, comes with an impressive set of superlatives:

Titan to Manage New NYC Wireless Public Net

NEW YORK – A network of up to 10,000 wireless hotspots, all paired with out-of-home ad-display screens, will be available throughout the city and managed by Titan under a non-exclusive franchise agreement announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio today.

Don’t start looking tomorrow for the nearest place in the five boroughs to hook up online, though. The first kiosks for access – replacing locations for that modern anachronism, the public pay telephone – won’t be in place until late next year.

Philport Retiring as TAB Chief at Year’s End

NEW YORK – Joe Philport, chief of the OOH-measurement Traffic Audit Bureau (TAB) for the past 12 years, will retire at the end of 2014.

Joe PhilportThe traffic ratings group also announced today that it will review the changing needs of the OOH industry in a variety of areas, including metrics and TAB leadership.

Nancy Fletcher, president/CEO of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, will also be interim TAB CEO after Philport’s retirement.

Philport, who joined TAB as CEO in 2002, led TAB as it developed its Out of Home Ratings system, which offers accountability and more accurate measurement of audiences actually viewing OOH advertising.

Lamar Up 4.3% in 3Q ’14; REIT Vote Now Set

BATON ROUGE, La. – Lamar Advertising Company reported a 4.3% revenue gain in this year’s third quarter, as the OOH firm heads to a stockholder’s meeting next Monday to confirm its conversion into a real estate investment trust (REIT).

LamarLamar reported net revenues of $335 million for third quarter 2014, up from $321.1 million for 3Q 2013. Operating income for this year’s third quarter was $86 million — compared to $67.2 million for the same period last year – and 3Q 2014’s net income of $35 doubles the $17.1 million at the same time last year.

iSIGN Gets $1.5 million in Private Placement

TORONTO – iSIGN Media Solutions Inc., a provider of leading provider of interactive mobile advertising solutions in North America, closed a non-brokered private placement today to raise gross proceeds of $1,530,575.

iSignThe proceeds from the sale of the Notes will be used to retire outstanding short-term convertible notes issued this July and maturing on Oct. 28.

iSIGN issued issuing 9,566,094 units — with units including one common share and a share warrant — at 16 cents per unit. Warrants allow holders to buy shares at 24 cents for a period of 24 months from the date of closing. All securities are subject to a four-month-hold period.
